HPS District Newsletter - 2026 Summer Edition

Dear Haverhill Families,
As we close another successful school year, I want to reflect on the many accomplishments, growth, and achievements that have defined the 2025-2026 school year.
Throughout the year, our students demonstrated perseverance, curiosity, and a commitment to learning. Whether in the classroom, on the stage, on the athletic field, or through service to the community, they continue to make us proud and show what is possible when students are supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. None of this would be possible without the support of our families and the dedication of our teachers and staff. Thank you for your partnership throughout the year. Your involvement, encouragement, and trust have helped create opportunities for students to learn, grow, and succeed.
This summer, we will officially say goodbye to the old Consentino Middle School building. For decades, it has been a second home to thousands of students, filled with years of cherished memories and incredible student accomplishments. As we honor the past, we are also celebrating exciting new beginnings. On Monday evening, we held the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the brand-new, state-of-the-art Dr. Albert B. Consentino Middle School. This stunning new building is a direct reflection of what our community can accomplish when we work together, and it represents a massive investment in the future of Haverhill students. We are excited to see the hallways and classrooms filled with laughter and learning.
Although summer vacation is beginning, learning opportunities will continue across the district. Our Summer Enrichment Programs will start soon, and summer bus routes are now available on our website. We encourage participating families to review transportation information before programs begin.
Our Summer Reading Lists are now live on the website! While summer is always full of busy adventures, sunshine, and fun, we hope you’ll also take the time for those quiet, peaceful moments curled up with a good book. We have a great selection of books for all ages on our list.
As we head into the summer break, please take this time to rest, recharge, and enjoy precious moments with family and friends. Thank you again for being such an integral part of our school community. It is your partnership that makes our district so special.
I wish all of our students, families, educators, and staff a safe, relaxing, and joyful summer. We look forward to welcoming you back in the fall, ready to turn the page to an exciting new chapter together.

HOLD THE COURT, MILES JUST TOOK THE ALL-CONFERENCE HONOR!
A massive congratulations to Miles Stapel on being named to the MVC Tennis All-Conference Second Team at No. 1 singles!
Holding down the No. 1 spot is no joke—facing the toughest competition every single match—and Miles absolutely crushed it this season. Hard work, ace serves, and pure hustle paid off!
If you happen to see Miles, make sure you give our No. 1 singles star a big congratulations!
Haverhill High School
Honoring History at Haverhill High!
The Exchange Club of Haverhill recently gathered to rededicate the Freedom Shrine at Haverhill High School, adding a brand-new plaque to this incredible display.
First installed in 2011, the shrine features copies of 20 foundational American documents—including the Gettysburg Address and an early draft of the Declaration of Independence. As HPS History Coach John Craven noted, the shrine serves as a powerful "teaching tool," bringing history off the pages and into the hallways for our students every day.
A special thank you to the HHS Junior ROTC Honor Guard for presenting the colors, Stephanie Carpenito for a beautiful rendition of the national anthem, and the Exchange Club for their lasting dedication to our schools and community!

Haverhill Public Schools partners with Cartwheel
Haverhill Public Schools Families,
During the school year, students benefit from consistent routines, peer connection, and structured learning. Over the summer, those supports often shift and for students who navigate anxiety, emotional struggles, or transition challenges, that disruption can make things harder.
The good news: our virtual mental health partner, Cartwheel, is available all summer long to provide support including:
-
Virtual therapy for students to maintain progress, build skills, and prepare for the fall
-
Parent or caregiver guidance to support routines, communication, and expectations at home
-
Family therapy to navigate transitions or ongoing stressors together
-
Psychiatric support, when appropriate, to help maintain progress and support students’ well-being
Appointments are virtual, summer scheduling is flexible, and care is available in multiple languages. For students who have MassHealth, care is completely free. Most private insurance plans are accepted.
Even short-term or lower-frequency support over the summer can help students return to school feeling more prepared, and getting started takes just a few minutes. Learn more and complete this form.
Cartwheel has also created parent guides to help your family over the summer on topics like: helping your child build healthy screen habits, navigating summer without structure, strengthening family connections, and more! You can access the free resources here.
With care,
Deborah Ibanez
Executive Director of Student Support Services

All-Conference Honors for Hillie Lacrosse!

Thank you for leaving it all on the field and putting on a fantastic show this season. Awesome work holding it down for Haverhill!
Once a Hillie, always a Hillie! Let's Go Hillies!
Haverhill Public Schools

Our Hillies are making their voices heard!
On Friday, June 5, students from all four Haverhill middle schools and Haverhill High School proudly represented our district at the Statewide Civics Showcase at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Boston.
After earning top honors at the Citywide Civics Showcase in May, these students had the opportunity to present their projects to peers from across Massachusetts and receive valuable feedback from community leaders and advisors. Although there were some nerves at the start of the day, our students spoke with confidence, passion, and expertise as they shared their ideas for making a difference in their communities.
As Massachusetts Secretary of Education Stephen Zrike and Department of Youth Services Commissioner Cecely Reardon reminded attendees, students are the changemakers of our society—and our Hillies proved exactly that.
We are also incredibly proud of five Haverhill High School juniors who served as student leaders throughout the event. From emceeing the showcase to conducting interviews and assisting participants, they helped make the day a success while showcasing outstanding leadership skills.
This achievement reflects not only the dedication of our students, but also the support of their families, teachers, and staff members across the district who help inspire civic engagement and student success every day.
Congratulations to all who participated! It was a great day to be a Hillie!

Career Technical Education
Freshmen in the CTE Healthcare Occupations program were invited to spend time learning in the healthcare labs at Northern Essex Community College. Students were excited to participate in hands-on activities such as removing surgical staples and touring NECC's actual ambulance. While learning about the many different programs offered at NECC students also learned about the close ties between these health careers and that by working together, lives can be saved. A huge Thank You to Ms. Kathy Hudson, Dean of Health Professions for her support of our program, not only as a member of our Program Advisory Committee but for spending her whole day with our students.

May was an incredibly successful and busy month for our Raider Teams, who brought home 30 additional trophies, bringing their impressive yearly total to 81 trophies!
The season isn't over yet! The Raiders will compete one final time on June 13 at Assabet, where our underclassmen will have the opportunity to showcase their skills, teamwork, and determination.
This summer, our cadets will also participate in a Leadership Camp at Camp Edwards on Cape Cod, joining 170 cadets from 10 MCJROTC programs across the region to develop leadership, teamwork, and character.
In addition, preparations are underway for the annual summer hiking program. Cadets will complete three training hikes before taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Washington from August 18–20.

Greenleaf Academy

Greenleaf Academy celebrated its Graduation Ceremony, a moment filled with pride, joy, and well-earned accomplishment. While the graduating class may have been smaller than HHS, it was truly mighty in every sense of the word
Surrounded by family, friends, educators, and staff, the Greenleaf community came together to honor each graduate’s journey—sharing memories, reflecting on growth, and celebrating every milestone that led to this day. The sense of support and connection in the room was a powerful reminder of what makes this school community so special.
The celebration also recognized Greenleaf Academy’s eighth-grade students, who were honored with awards for their achievements and officially promoted to high school. Their hard work and dedication were celebrated as they prepare to take the next exciting step in their educational journey.
To the Class of Greenleaf Academy and our rising high school students—your perseverance, resilience, and determination have brought you to these important milestones. Your futures are bright, and this is only the beginning.

Students had a fantastic time "stepping back in time" to explore local history firsthand. From learning about early farm life to exploring the beautiful historic grounds, it was the perfect interactive learning experience to wrap up the school year.
We love seeing our students' faces light up when history comes to life outside the classroom! A big thank you to the staff at Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm for hosting us, and to our amazing teachers and chaperones for making this trip possible.

Future Leaders in Action: CTE Internship Presentations!
As we wrap up the school year, many of our students are finishing strong with their final presentations!
Each intern in our Career Technical Education (CTE) Program has stepped up to the podium, spending time in front of an audience to share the incredible, real-world experiences they’ve had throughout their internships.
Stepping up to present takes confidence, reflection, and professionalism—and our students absolutely knocked it out of the park. We are incredibly proud to see how much they’ve grown, the hands-on skills they’ve mastered, and the ways they've represented Haverhill High out in the professional world.
Thank you to all of our local business partners and mentors who welcomed our interns this year and helped guide the next generation of professionals!

Haverhill High School
The Haverhill High School Band continued in its tradition of honoring those who died in service to our nation by participating in the annual Memorial Day Parade. Though the rainy weather meant that the band could not march in the parade as they normally would, the group still performed at the indoor ceremony at Haverhill City Hall. The band performed a medley of marches associated with each branch of the United States Armed Services, including “Anchors Aweigh” by Lt. C.A. Zimmerman, a tune commonly associated with the U.S. Navy.
“HHS Band Students are proud to participate in this event,” said Susan Hatfield, Supervisor of Fine & Performing Arts. “They understand the meaning of the event and why they are there, and I think they feel honored to contribute.”
In addition to participating in an event that honors our Nation’s veterans, the performance is an opportunity for students to refine their musical/technical skills while also getting a sense of the professional social norms expected of them in ceremonial settings, which often include band or orchestra performances.
Special thank you to Sue-Lynn Leung for sharing her photograph

A Masterpiece of a Month: Celebrating the City-Wide Arts Showcase!

Students of all ages gathered at Haverhill High School for our spectacular City-Wide Arts Showcase. Our incredibly talented students have been working hard all year long in Art, Music, and Performing Arts classes, and this showcase was the perfect way to wrap up the school year.
From stunning visual art displays to breathtaking musical and theatrical performances, it was a beautiful celebration of community, dedication, and expression. We are so grateful to everyone who came out to support our young artists and share in this special event!
A Special Thank You: A huge shout-out to HHS Art Teacher Mr. Peter Morse for capturing the magic of the evening! Thank you for the beautiful pictures that allow us to relive these wonderful moments.
